One of the best experiences during my stay in Tuscany this past spring was spending a day at a wonderful destination wedding venue: Agriturismo Il Rigo.
I had fallen in love with Il Rigo during a round of wedding location scouting online and shortly after found myself on the train from my little Tuscan hilltown to San Quirico d’Orcia. I met with the owners Luisa and Matthias, looking forward to checking out this gem of a wedding location in Tuscany for my future brides.
In true Tuscan style, right upon my arrival I was treated to a fantastic, family-style lunch. Luisa, who runs Il Rigo together with her German husband Matthias, bakes her own bread, grows her own salads and veggies and forages the surrounding hillsides for wild flowers and herbs to be added to each of the homemade, delicious meals. Our lunch started with an antipasti platter, followed by a seasonal pasta course, spaghetti with wild fennel pesto, accompanied by fresh artichokes and of course, as you do in Tuscany, a good glass of red wine & the most beautiful view over the Tuscan countryside.
Over lunch, we shared our views of how we see the wedding world, how much our hearts beat for intimate elopements and weddings in the countryside, for an easy-going, laid-back approach, for wedding days that carry that personal and of course, natural touch we love so much. Away from all the expectations, all the rules, just celebrating true, raw love.
Once lunch was over, Luisa gave me a tour of the farmhouse, a family heritage, which now holds some beautifully furnished guest rooms, a courtyard and a pergola for wedding dinners to be held, she showed me around the bounteous kitchen garden where she grows much of the food served organicly and of course the panoramic spot where outdoor wedding ceremonies are celebrated at Il Rigo.
Outside on the lawn Matthias served a quick espresso before we took off for a country walk around nearby fields, through tiny, untamed forests and past ruins which once were working farms. We discovered a rare variety of wild orchids and bushes of juniper berries. All the while, Luisa made a beautiful, natural bouqet from wildflowers, her love for flowers and pure nature shining through and definitely two passions I share with her! At one point of our walk we stood under the giant oak of their farm house Ginestreto, a place which serves as another romantic spot to hold a symbolic outdoor wedding cermony at Il Rigo. Around us, just peace and Tuscan beauty.
What makes Il Rigo so special, apart from its wonderful position atop the Tuscan hills with those stunning views of Capella di Vitaleta, Pienza and Monte Amiata?
It is the fact that so many pieces of the puzzle that make a wedding complete are homemade, grown and designed right there. Flowers and wedding bouqet come from the garden, cake and food from the kitchen, the decoration often made by Luisa, too. And once the wedding party danced the night away under the stars in Tuscany, they find their beds in one of the comfy guest rooms, only to wake up the next morning to an extended breakfast brunch with their loved ones. Wedding weekends which spread over several days and give families and friends a chance to reconnect on a deeper level are not rare at Il Rigo. Nor are elopements, with more and more couples lately coming to Il Rigo to celebrate an intimate wedding.
The most important part though, which makes Il Rigo so uniquely what it is, is Luisa’s passion for bringing each intimate wedding and elopement to life. She really is after a soulful experience for her couples, wants to understand them and their dream of their wedding day, wants them to feel welcomed, loves proposing ideas to make each wedding a true reflection of the couple in love. Then, seeing how the day unfolds after months and months, to her is the best reward for the thoughtful planning that went into it.
I still remember my visit so lively as if it was yesterday and I can say, Il Rigo serves as an absolute stunning wedding location for slow & relaxed country weddings in Tuscany.
If you are planning your wedding at Il Rigo – or somewhere in Tuscany, Umbria or Le Marche – please get in touch! My heart beats for Italy and I would be completely delighted to capture your wedding day there!
